At NGFS, Charles wears many hats. He is a Coach, a Trip Coordinator, and the Lower School PE teacher. While Charles will begin his eleventh year of employment in 2017, he was first introduced to the school in 1984 when he was an intern and the interim director of the school’s aftercare program. Since then, he has fallen in love with New Garden’s strong Quaker community and focus on education.

Before being employed at New Garden full-time, Charles worked as the director of Kinderhut Children’s Ski School and Childcare Facility in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Visitors to the campus who meet Charles will notice his welcoming smile and friendly demeanor. Charles says, “I love working in such a close knit community and vividly remember my first day at NGFS and the overwhelming sense of welcome that I received from the entire community. I try to keep that in mind in all my interactions with both new members to the community as well as those that have become among my treasured friends.”

Charles has a wide variety of interests including travelling, ultimate frisbee, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking, hiking, mountain climbing, running, and yoga. He is married to Erin Allred, New Garden’s auxiliary programs assistant. He has two daughters, Caroline and Ellie, and two cats, Kingsley and Sadie.
